Yarn Along

Over the weekend I cast on for a pair of longies, I needed a bit of change after so many rows of zigzag.
I think I’m going to have to get some proper stitch markers. In the beginning of the pattern, with three provisional cast-ons, you need six markers.
I’ve always used scraps of yarn, but it gets thoroughly confusing with so many bits of wool on a tiny garment like this. I did manage though and have just started on the first leg. Phew.
Apart from the stitch marker chaos, I found the pattern clear and easy to follow, like all of Kelly Brooker’s that I’ve tried so far.
You also get a real sense of accomplishment, turning over page after page… it’s a long pattern, to accommodate all the different sizes and yarns.

I’ve been reading The Red Tent, a novel set in biblical times, about the lives of the wives of Jacob and his only daughter Dinah.
I didn’t enjoy the first part of the book as much – it’s a lot of pregnancy and childbirth with all its complications a few thousand years ago; maybe just a bit close to home at the moment. But I did enjoy the last part of Dinah’s own story – and yes, crying in the bathroom again. Why do I always get to the sad part when I’m brushing my teeth in the evening?!

  1. I use clashing scraps of yarn as stitch markers too – I just can’t manage with anything more heavy/dangly as I find that “proper” stitch markers get in the way. But I am always worried that my scrappy ones will untie and then I’ll lose their place!
My mum has raved about that book to me in the past – but I think I’d find the pregnancy and childbirth bit hard going too. Also, on a very superficial level, my cat’s called Dinah so I’ve always steered clear! How daft!

The pants look great!! I loved The Red Tent, but I am a bit of a birth nutter ;)

Proper markers do seem to help at times. I seem to always need them though when they are not around and end up using loops of yarn. Cute longies. I read The Red Tent many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

What is it with the bathroom and crying? Maybe you should stop going in there ;) When I was pregnant with my son, I could not even finish a book about the holocaust …..non stop crying!!! Love the knits on the needles.

That yarn looks squishy and soft. And I’ve never thought of reading while brushing before! It sounds like a great way of getting a few more pages in during the day!

Cute longies! They are on my tentitive list of things to knit for our coming babe too – it’s just a question of what will I actually get to doing :)

I have read that book and thought it was fantastic. The Bible doesn’t say much about Dinah, so this hypothetical story was very interesting. I will read it again some day.

  8. I eventually learned to make my own stitchmarkers with jewelry supplies I found at my local craft store. :-)

Haven’t heard of the Red Tent, but it sounds interesting. Of course crying while brushing your teeth is normal when you’re pregnant! :) The longies look good. I know what you mean about too many ends. I especially dislike when the yarn is not spliced together (or knotted even!) from the manufacturer and I have to cut it and restart again. That’s a pain.

  10. The longies look lovely! That yarn color is sweet!
I heard mention of The Red Tent a few years ago, but never read it! May have to add that to my TBR pile! I did however just pick up from the library yesterday, Chosen: The Lost Diaries of Queen Esther. It promises to be a GREAT book!!

Love the longies. I wish that I had made some when my babes were little. It would have been perfect over the cloth diapers I used.

The longies look great. I’ve heard that book mentioned a lot – maybe I will get hold of a copy, if I ever get some decent reading time! I used to use scraps of wool but was forever pullin them out so now I have a little knickknack bag with stitch markers, holders, row counters etc, so much easier.

  13. Those are my favorite longies too! It’s such a great pattern. I do believe it might be time to make another pair. :)

Love the longies, they are too cute. I know what you mean about stitch markers, I have an assortment. I normally love to have scrap yarn, but sometimes, you just need proper ones! I liked the Red Tent too. A good cry is a good thing :)

how fun to knit for your baby on the way! i remember those days. sigh. i used to use my babies diaper pins for stitch markers, and holders. i’m so attached to them they are still in my knitting basket.

I use bits of other wool as stitchmarkers. My latest project needed stitchmarkers, right next to yarn overs. I found them so annoying that I left the markers out and just followed the pattern. Worked a lot better.

  17. Erin says:

Your longies look marvellous. I love the grey!

  18. Marfa says:

Oh, someone just recommended that book to me….I’ll have to see if I can get it at the library! Nice “longies”….I didn’t know what they were. ♥
